We are always looking out for new volunteers of all ages and abilities to support our work to the West Somerset Railway. There are numerous volunteering roles on offer; for example, restoring carriages at Williton Station, or others are based inside The Gauge Museum. For more information about enquiries regarding volunteering, email: volunteers@wsrail.net
Stewardship is an essential component for our volunteers to showcase the Heritage Trust (formerly Steam Trust) in all its glory.
Are you a commited person, who likes heritage railways and seeing new people each hour, each day? Or, someone who is eager to learn about our history and unveil the story to others; please get in touch.
Upon successful selection following the WSR Plc’s statutory volunteer enrolment policies, comprehensive training will be given alongside other friendly, committed and enthusiastic volunteers.
The Gauge Junction, Model Railway situated on Level One in the Gauge Museum is a magnet for model railway enthusiasts and proven to be successful in recruiting young railway volunteers too.
The Model Railway, since its founding in the 1990s has gone and above the then ambitions to create this railway department a hive of potential within young, commited volunteers. One example, is the West Somerset Railway’s current General Manager, Justin Kerr-Peterson. He joined the team in the late 90’s, which from his volunteering duties, forged to become highly expierenced in the railway sector. There are countless other individuals who have their story about this team shaping their lives.

Restoration plays a big part of the Heritage Trust’s ethos, supporting the wider West Somerset Railway.
Without volunteers to support the preservation and restoring of heritage carriages and artefacts, these historical masterpieces will not be preserved for the public.

The West Somerset Railway has had the ‘Tracker’ scheme, for more than a decade where we facilitate volunteering roles to those individuals from the age of thirteen or fourteen right the way up to adulthood at eighteen. To comply with relevant legislation and statutory regulations, some volunteers who train and teach Trackers are DBS (formerly CRB) checked and safeguarding trained. For more information please email: volunteers@wsrail.net.
Due to the safety critical nature of some railway volunteering roles, on an active steam railway, there many volunteering roles for Trackers to undertake which doesnt pose a too big risk to themselves, other volunteers or the public.
Roles include: TTI (Travelling Ticket Inspector), Model Railway Operator, station duties, on-board buffet support, stewardship, shop & cafe assistance, restoration and event marshalling and support.
We are an indpendent charity, one of two mainly supporting the West Somerset Railway Plc. Volunteering and work expierence expressions of interest are not processed by us, but centrally through the Plc administration at Minehead Station. However, we are more than happy to pass your interest to the relevant parties down at Minehead.
