Our Families Offer

Our Families Offer

If you are planning to visit the West Somerset Railway, don’t forget to visit us at the Gauge Museum.  Based on Platform One at Bishops Lydeard Station, the museum tells the railway’s story, from its origins, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, to its decline and subsequent rescue by a devoted group of volunteers who turned it into one of Somerset’s key tourist attractions.

With a range of interactive exhibits, the museum offers a host of ways to engage with our history.  Explore the impact of the railway through our hands-on post boxes and goods exhibition, take on the touchscreen with our fun family quiz, experience life as a signaller by working the levers in our Powderham Signal Box or dress up and step aboard our Victorian Sleeping carriage and experience the height of luxury from the golden age of steam.

Entrance to the museum is completely free.

Museum Trails

In addition to our regular exhibits, we also offer a family museum trail, which acts as a guide to all of our major exhibits, helping you delve into our collections in greater detail.

For a copy of our trail, just ask one of our Stewards, who will be happy to provide you with one, along with a clipboard and pencil.

Family Event Days

We run a variety of family event days throughout the year, to coincide with school holidays and Gala events.   Taking place on the lower floor of the Gauge Museum, our Art, Design and Craft activities are aimed towards exploring some of the History, Science and Engineering of our railway and are suitable for children of all ages.

Family Event days are free to take part in and the themes vary throughout the year.
